Our programs:

EmpowerHer Cameroon offers tailored programs to address the challenges faced by women and girls in Southwest Cameroon, equipping them with the tools to thrive economically, socially, and as community leaders.

  • Leadership & Advocacy: Building community leaders and gender equality advocates.

  • Vocational Training: Skills in tailoring, agriculture, and business management.

  • Entrepreneurship Development: Turning ideas into businesses with mentorship and resources.

  • Financial Literacy: Budgeting, saving, and investing for economic security.

Driving Sustainability

EmpowerHer Cameroon is deeply committed to sustainable development, recognizing that clean water, healthcare, and renewable energy are essential for resilient communities.

  • Water Access: Solar-powered water systems reduce the burden on women and girls, who often spend hours fetching water. This provides them with more time for education, entrepreneurship, and family care.
  • Healthcare: Accessible healthcare services improve maternal health, reduce disease burden, and ensure overall community well-being.

  • Renewable Energy: Solar panel installations power schools, clinics, and businesses, promoting clean energy and reducing reliance on non-renewable resources.

By integrating these solutions into our programs, we not only empower women and girls but also help mitigate the environmental challenges faced by communities in Southwest Cameroon.

The Situation in Southwest Cameroon

Southwest Cameroon is currently grappling with a sociopolitical and humanitarian crisis stemming from longstanding tensions between the Anglophone and Francophone regions of the country. This conflict, often referred to as the Anglophone Crisis, has escalated into violence, displacing hundreds of thousands of people and disrupting essential services such as education, healthcare, and infrastructure. The region has seen widespread insecurity, with schools shut down, villages destroyed, and families forced to flee their homes.

Impact on Young Girls and Women

Disrupted Education:

The crisis has forced many schools to close, leaving young girls without access to education. This disrupts their learning journey and limits their future opportunities, perpetuating cycles of poverty and dependence.

Increased Vulnerability:

Women and girls in displaced communities face heightened risks of exploitation, gender-based violence, and early marriages as families struggle to cope with instability. The lack of security and basic necessities makes them particularly vulnerable.

Severe Shortages in Basic Needs:
Displaced populations often face acute shortages of clean water and reliable electricity. This forces women and girls to spend hours fetching water, sometimes from unsafe sources, and limits their ability to study, work, or ensure their families’ health and well-being. Lack of electricity also hampers access to information and opportunities, further isolating them in an already dire situation.

Economic Hardships:

Many women who previously contributed to their families' incomes through small businesses or farming have lost their livelihoods due to the conflict. This economic instability further marginalizes them and reduces their capacity to provide for themselves and their families.

Mental Health Struggles:

The trauma of displacement, violence, and uncertainty takes a toll on the mental health of women and girls. Without proper support systems, their emotional and psychological well-being suffers, which can affect their ability to rebuild their lives.

Limited Access to Healthcare:

Healthcare services in the region are severely strained, leaving  girls and women without access to essential hygiene or healthcare, reproductive health care, prenatal services, and general medical assistance. This puts their health and that of their children at risk.

Why Action is Needed

The ongoing crisis in Southwest Cameroon underscores the urgent need for targeted interventions to empower young girls and women. By addressing their unique challenges, we can help restore their sense of hope, dignity, and agency. Empowering women and girls through education, skills training, and community support is not only vital for their personal development but also critical for rebuilding and stabilizing the region.

Through initiatives like EmpowerHer Cameroon, we can provide tools, resources, and opportunities for women and girls to reclaim their futures, fostering resilience and driving positive change in their communities despite the challenges they face.
